Moving Floor Pools Frequently Asked Questions

Moving floor pools stimulates a lot of questions. We are delighted to present a Q&A giving answers to the most frequently asked questions. What is a moving floor pool? It is a swimming pool that is designed and built with a floor at the base of the pool. Many people want a luxury pool without permanently sacrificing space to the pool. When the moving floor is activated, it rises to the top of the pool, covering the water with a solid floor. Using a control panel, clients pre-set the depth of water for swimming. They can adjust the floor level to any depth to accommodate different requirements, for example, a shallow depth for children to paddle.

Who buys moving floor pools?
People who want multi-use space. We have clients who transform the pool area for all types of social occasions.

Do you make the moving floor?
We design and build pools with moving floors; however, we are not manufacturers of moving floors. USASPC is an authorised dealer for Hydrofloors® and builds pools using its advanced movable floor system.

How does a moving floor work?
The Hydrofloors® movable floors structure comprises stainless steel beams, which are calculated precisely to the pool size requirements to allow for a strong load capacity. A higher load capacity at the surface level (350 kg/m2) is achieved by using locking pins sliding automatically in the pool shell walls. Under the structure, between the main stainless steel beams we install buoyancy packs; these are designed to make the floor float in the highest position.

Can you explain the floor structure and finishing?
The floor surface finish consists of 3mm thick stainless steel plates and are ready to be tiled/finished. The finish will match the rest of the flooring in the room.  This ensures a seamless look when the floor is raised. The complete floor structure is buoyant and pulled down via cables and a pulley system with water based hydraulic cylinder to the desired depth. All components (structure, cables, etc) are sized taking into consideration all safety factors.

How much time does the floor take to reach to the top of the pool?
A Hydrofloors® moving floor takes approximately 8 minutes to rise from the bottom of the pool to the top of the pool.

Where does the water go when the moving floor is raised?
All the pool water is held safely beneath the moving floor.

Is there a limit to how many times a day one can raise and lower the moving floor?
Clients can raise and lower the pool floor whenever they wish.

How much room is required for the moving floor?
The moving floor can be built to almost any size required.  Depending on the size, the pool structure will need to be between 27inches and 35inches deeper than the swimming depth to accommodate the floatation tanks and operating mechanisms.

Can you retrofit a moving floor into an existing swimming pool?
Retrofitting a moving floor into an existing pool would require major modifications on the pool so we do not recommend doing this. Clients should incorporate a moving floor at the pool planning stage.

What weight can the raised floor take?
The load capacity at the surface level is 350 kg/m2.

Can you have a moving floor on an outdoor pool?
Yes.  A moving floor can be installed in both indoor and outdoor pools. An outdoor moving floor pool provides the same space saving benefits, providing a terrace for socialising.

Does the moving floor come with a warranty?
Yes.  Hydrofloors® warranty provides the following:

  • 10-year warranty on the stainless steel structure, giding rollers, locking pins
  • 3-year warranty on buoyancy packs, cables, pulleys
  • 2-year warranty on hydraulic power pack, ram and other electro- parts

Complete warranty details are contained in the Hydrofloors® warranty certificate.

USASPC would like to thank Hydrofloors® for its assistance in compiling this Q&A document.

A Floor for Every Occasions

Every property owner wants to maximise the use of space in their home and this is especially so when that space is the basement of an exclusive property in central Boston where square footage comes at a premium.

Every property owner wants to maximise the use of space in their home and this is especially so when that space is the basement of an exclusive property in central Boston where square footage comes at a premium.

This opulent 29 x 13 feet pool is a focal point in the basement but also allows the family to reclaim the space when the pool is not in use. USA Swimming Pool company designed this luxury pool with a Hydrofloors moving floor built into the base of the pool.  At the push of a button, the moving floor can be raised to any level to create different swimming depths.  When the floor is fully raised it completely covers the pool, providing a solid, load-bearing floor – the room is then transformed and can be used for other social activity.  When it’s time to swim again, the floor is quickly and easily lowered.  The client/design team on this major property renovation maximised the floor space by selecting a pool with a Hydrofloors moving floor.

In addition to the space savings, a pool that is totally closed off with a solid floor provides maximum safety, especially if there are young children or pets in the family.
